When Mike Leigh got his first screenplay Oscar nomination for Secrets & Lies. He chuckled as people who knew how he worked, he did not simply write an screenplay.

Leigh would work with his core actors to devise a story and the characters they portray.

It is not ad libbing or just improvisation. This Arena documentary has Leigh with actors such as David Threlfall, Brenda Blethyn, Phil Davis doing workshops as to how to bring their characters to life.

It was a unique way to develop characters for television. At the time this program was made Leigh was a BBC face, better known for his Play for Todays.

Soon afterwards he struck up an association with Channel 4 and its film arm.
