Jonathan Demme's 2006 documentary "Neil Young: Heart of Gold" caught Young in a very pastoral mood, touring to support the gentle, country-folk album "Prairie Wind". Three years later, he captures Young in a very different mood, touring to support "Chrome Dreams II", an album that was billed as a sequel to an unreleased 1977 album, but felt like a spiritual successor to "Rust Never Sleeps" or "Ragged Glory".

Young is playing with a hybrid band comprised of members of Crazy Horse and folks like multi-instrumentalist Ben Keith, a regular from his softer albums. This gives him the ability to play a mix of material and he takes full advantage. The heart of the show though is the loud, shambling material including a 20 minute version of the "Chrome Dreams II" song "No Hidden Path" and an epic closing version of "Like a Hurricane". (On the delightfully stranger side, they do a version of his instrumental hit "The Sultan" from his super early days in the Squires.)

This is a ragged, shambling show and Demme matches it with a loose, handheld style combining 8mm and digital video. It's not one of his more elegant concert films, but it's style matches the content.

For some reason, this was never released on home video in any format.
