Old School Dungeon Crawling with Real Atmosphere

Eye of the Beholder is one of those classic Dungeons and Dragons games that still has a special pull, even if it shows its age today. The setup is simple but effective. A party is sent beneath Waterdeep to investigate evil in the sewers, and from there the game becomes a claustrophobic first person dungeon crawl filled with monsters, traps, secrets and puzzles. I like that feeling. It is not trying to overwhelm you with spectacle. It pulls you in through atmosphere, mapping, danger and the sense that every step deeper into the dungeon matters.

The real time combat gives the game more tension than many older role playing games. You are constantly moving, turning, attacking, casting spells and trying to survive narrow corridors where one mistake can quickly become a problem. The AD and D foundation gives it personality, especially when party creation, classes, spells and equipment start to matter. I also enjoy how physical the dungeon feels. Switches, hidden doors, keys and strange layouts make exploration feel rewarding, even when the game is being difficult.

At the same time, it is not the easiest game to return to today. The interface is old, the maze design can be confusing, and some parts feel more demanding than fun if you are not in the right mood. It also lacks some of the storytelling depth that later role playing games would build on. Still, I respect it a lot. Eye of the Beholder has charm, atmosphere and historical weight. It may not be perfect, but for me it remains a strong reminder of why this style of dungeon crawler became so loved.

After the heroes enter the sewers, the ceiling collapses behind them. The only way out is the way down, into a dungeon filled with monsters, traps and puzzles.
