The name of the movie refers to an area of Northern California coastline which starts about 150 miles north of San Francisco, and ends about 300 miles north of San Francisco, located in Mendocino and Humboldt Counties, west of the King Mountain Range, and which is the least developed section of coastline in all of California. The name "Lost Coast" derives from extreme depopulation in the 1930s. Also, the steepness and related geologic instability (meaning earthquakes and mud slides, etc.) of the ocean side of the mountains made this coastline too costly for state and county road builders to build roads.
