Little Master is very clearly aimed at children, but that didn't take anything away from it for me. The idea of a Qing Dynasty "Little Prince" suddenly finding himself in modern Taiwan could have been played as horror, but the movie is much more interested in comedy, friendship, and the chaos created by a supernatural child trying to fit into an ordinary kid's world.

The humor is broad, the story is simple, and there is plenty of youthful silliness, but it works because the movie never pretends to be anything else. The friendship between the Little Prince and Xiao Bao gives it some genuine warmth, while the Taoist and jiangshi elements give the story a personality beyond the usual children's comedy.

It isn't particularly sophisticated, and some of the production certainly shows its age (including the version I watched was clearly recorded from television), but I found that part of its charm. A cute, quirky little movie that was simply fun to watch.

They encompass a wide range of styles, tones, and themes, appealing to various tastes and audiences.
