Most fans hail the "real" KINGSTON TRIO as Bob Shane (sex symbol) + Nick Reynolds (runt of the litter) + Dave Guard (the acknowledged leader) which is the "original" group until Dave Guard quit (in 1961). These guys sold millions of albums for Capitol Records and paved the way for Peter Paul & Mary + The Limeliters + The Chad Mitchell Trio + The Brothers Four, etc....then John Stewart (the new guy) replaced Dave Guard and they became "the second" KINGSTON TRIO. Still an excellent folksinging group who managed to sell albums for Capitol Record (until 1964) until THE BEATLES joined Capitol and the KINGSTONS moved onto Decca Records when Capitol dropped their contract. But to me personally, there were 2 KINGSTON TRIOS: Nick Bob Dave & Nick Bob John. The DVD: KINGSTON TRIO & FRIENDS REUNION disappointed KT fans by watering down this so-called REUNION concert. Bob Shane (original founder) formed a "new" KINGSTON TRIO with George Grove and Roger Gambill and wanted to promote his (then) CURRENT group. I was OK with host Tommy Smothers (of The Smothers Brothers) but we did not need Mary Travers or Lindsey Buckingham (of Fleetwood Mac). New "Trio" members George Grove + Roger Gambill are there by default.....but fans wanted to see Bob Shane singing with Nick Reynolds + Dave Guard + John Stewart....the original and semi-original Kingstons - - - The Real KINGSTON TRIO. All we got from NBD was "Tom Dooley" + "Hard Aint It Hard" + Zombie Jamborie. THREE SONGS??? And all we got from NBJ was "Greenback Dollar" + "Chilly Winds" + Reuben James". THREE SONGS??? When Dave Guard was asked about this REUNION, he said, and I quote: "In my opinion, fans will be disappointed." Yes Dave, we were. And when Bob Shane was told what Dave said, Bob snapped back with: "I don't give a damn what he says." - Now you know why the "original" KINGSTON TRIO broke up. Makes me wanna Hang Down My Head And Cry !!! (apologies to Tom Dooley)
