KIBERA KID takes place in a large slum in east Africa. It gives a balanced view of life there and the choices youth face. There is a positive role model - the volunteer community leader who rescues the Kibera Kid from the crowd. Everyday life is shown is small touches, such as the opening scene with the children running to hear the Kibera Kid rap, the potatoes frying in an large pan, and the young girl peering through the hole in the wall to see what is going on. These glimpses into everyday life give KIBERA KID a sense of authenticity that makes life in Kibera accessible to the viewers. The main actor, Ignatius Juma, does a great job as Otieno. All of the supporting cast, especially Godfrey Ojiambo, the leader of The Razors gang are excellent. The film is engaging, while also educating. KIBERA KID can be enjoyed and understood by all ages.
