I saw the 'Memories' at the Forest Film Fest and have to say what a refreshing and surprisingly witty little comedy this movie is. There are many different layers to it and it also raises quite some controversial issues, but never goes for that forced cleverness that short films often have. On many occasions, it's actually very funny.

The story follows a paranoid, and quite strange creature, Adam, on his way back home from the mental institution. In between that journey home, ambiguous memories pop up which remind him of his family and the reasons why he looks forward - but is also afraid of - returning home. His mother is a terrible person but is also about to pass on her fortune to him. His brother, who seems to be the only person he really trusts - and is maybe even romantically involved with - is probably more disturbed than anybody else in this movie. And then there is the seductive Jeanie, the housekeeper, who he has to marry so he can fulfill what the testament demands from him. But the thing is that we never quite now whether we are experiencing those situations as Adam makes them up, or whether we can trust what we see. But in the end, it doesn't really matter. What matters is that everybody seems to somehow involuntarily conspire to render his life unbearable - only to discover that nobody is to blame as the situation has long since taken control over the characters' individual actions. Everybody tries to trick everybody else in quite vicious and sick ways. I think the sickest of them all wins in the end.

I guess this is just one way of describing this tour de force through our minds and petty everyday paranoias. And even though so much was going on, it all made sense to me in the end - for rather personal reasons, I was actually quite moved by it. But I'm sure on second sight, there are loads of new details to discover and maybe I didn't get all of it. I'm excited to see what Littger's next stuff will be. He's going to be great and seems to have a very weird vision of the world. And if you are reading this: If you ever need an actress, think of me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
