It's Sunday in Paris. Some sleep the day away. Some stay in town and hang out at cafes. And some pile into their cars and head upriver, to boat and swim and enjoy the healthy air.

There's a bit of a sly twinkle in this movie, about the utter dissatisfaction of a day of rest for the restless. A boulevardier tries to pick up girls. The trips to the country encounter traffic jams and would-be mashers too. Only the girl who sleeps the day away seems to content with how she spent her time. And when the sun goes down, all the lights in the City of Lights go on and the hectic pace resumes.

I wonder if the people who made Menschen am Sonntag saw this and thought "We can do better." With Mona Goya and Georges Peclet.
