Classic Fantasy Strategy That Still Has Power

Fantasy General is one of those older strategy games that still has a very special charm. The mix of fantasy, hex based battles, army building and slow tactical progress works really well, and I like how it takes the structure of games like Panzer General but gives it swords, magic, monsters and heroes instead. It feels simple on the surface, but there is enough depth in the unit choices, terrain and upgrades to keep every battle interesting.

What I enjoy most is the campaign feeling. Building an army over time, improving units, finding heroes and pushing back the Shadowlord gives the game a real sense of progress. The world is not the deepest fantasy setting ever made, but it has atmosphere, and the music adds a lot to that feeling. For a game from 1996 it has aged surprisingly well if you enjoy slower, thoughtful strategy.

It is not perfect. Some missions can feel a bit stiff, the interface shows its age, and the balance is not always smooth. Still, those flaws do not take away the special feeling the game has. Fantasy General is a strong and memorable strategy game, and for me it remains one of the better examples of classic fantasy strategy done right.
