A Sophisticated Hidden Gem: The Best Show CBS Never Aired

Having recently watched the full 42-minute master of this 2006 pilot, I am genuinely stunned that CBS didn't pick this up for a full series. Produced by Ridley and Tony Scott and directed by Bruce Beresford, the production quality is cinematic and the atmosphere is incredibly thick.

The fictional cult at the center of the story, the "Temple of Grand Design," feels chillingly authentic. To me, it clearly mirrors groups like Scientology with its focus on "Stages of Self-Awareness" and its strict system of "Ranks." Eion Bailey is hauntingly effective as "Brother," the charismatic intellectual leader who lures people into this radical new way of thinking by critiquing the "corporate con" of modern life.

The cast is an absolute powerhouse of talent before they became household names. Seeing a young Patrick J. Adams (pre-Suits) and Nick D'Agosto (pre-Heroes) alongside established talents like Fairuza Balk and Mena Suvari makes for a gripping experience.

As a longtime Stacey Farber fan, I was specifically eager to see her performance as Patty. While this edit focuses heavily on the Pacific Northwest cult mystery, her character serves as the vital link to Guy's "old life" in Boston. It's a massive shame we didn't get to see her storyline develop over a full season, as she would have been the perfect grounded lead for this high-stakes thriller.

"Orpheus" is a thought-provoking, dark, and sophisticated look at radical belief. It is a true piece of "lost media" that deserves to be seen. 10/10!
