This is the only episode of the series to contain a flashback. HBO execs worried that viewers struggling to get a hold of the show's numerous characters would have forgotten about Gant by the time his dead body is discovered, and forced David Simon to add the flashback, which he hated, as he envisioned the show never using any artificial storytelling techniques outside season-ending montages.
