    • Trivia
Alcatraz was a military prison beginning with holding Confederate prisoners of war in 1861. By 1866, it was determined that its use as a defensive fort was obsolete and it became a full-time prison. It was transferred to the Department of Justice in 1933 and became a federal prison in 1934. It was at this point that it reached the height of its fame and notoriety.
    • Goofs
The opening scene has West and Pike in a Chinese restaurant, opening and reading fortune cookies. Fortune cookies actually originated in Japan, and were introduced to the US at Golden Gate Park's Japanese Tea Garden restaurant sometime in the 1890s. Until around WWII, they were known as "fortune tea cakes". At about the same time as the name change, the dessert changed from being a characteristically Japanese item to a Chinese one, possibly as a result of wartime politics.
    • Quotes
      • Corporal Simon: There are 105 iron cannonballs in these three pyramids. Each ball weighs forty-two pounds. And there's only one minor little problem.
      • James T. West: Someone stacked them in the wrong place.
      • Corporal Simon: You got brains, too. On the other side of the parade ground. Start stacking.
      • James T. West: You realize, of course, this may ruin our friendship.
      • Corporal Simon: I'll take that chance. Start stacking.
