When Josh Randall (Steve McQueen) peers into the room where Mayor Barney Pax (Wayne Morris) and Carole Easter are discussing her husband's withdrawal from the mayoralty race, she fires her derringer at Randall, who stands partially behind a door. The bullet goes through the door without striking Randall, as do three more shots fired by Mayor Pax. The way the scene is filmed, Mrs. Easter's shot could not have missed Randall, and at least one of the three shots fired by Pax should have hit him as well. However Randall is not injured at all.
