Joyce DeWitt staged a sick-out for this episode when ABC tried to take back a raise that was promised, She called in sick saying she was "sick at heart, sick in the soul." She had a meeting with the network president, who reinstated her raise. But when she tried to return to work, the cast and crew were already working with a reworked script and there was not enough time to change it back. So DeWitt had to sit this episode out. Recurring guest star Anne Schedeen was given the lines originally written for DeWitt.
