The episode adapts the story "Mournin' Mess" from issue #38 of the original EC Comics "Tales from the Crypt" series, published in October 1953. Al Feldstein wrote the original comic story, and Jack Davis provided the artwork. EC Comics published "Tales from the Crypt" from 1950 to 1955 across 46 issues before the Comics Code Authority effectively forced the cancellation of the horror anthology line. The HBO television series drew its source material directly from the EC Comics horror anthology titles, including "Tales from the Crypt," "The Vault of Horror," and "The Haunt of Fear." William Gaines, who published the original EC Comics line, received a creator credit on the television series throughout its seven-season run.
