While arguing that General Hammond, SG-1 and the SGC are incompetent, Senator Kinsey brings up several examples of times when Earth came closest to being invaded or destroyed. One such incident he brings up is the foothold situation from Foothold (1999).

However, in Smoke & Mirrors (2002), it's stated multiple times that the foothold incident was covered up from others within the government, and specifically from Senator Kinsey. Even the NID, an organization charged with overseeing covert military operations and especially the Stargate program, is unaware of the incident.

Agent Barret of the NID became aware three episodes earlier in Smoke and Mirrors when a rogue NID agent used one of the alien devices to mimic a different person.
