Thomas Dekker played Thomas Picard, one of Captain Jean-Luc Picard's imaginary children in Star Trek: Generations (1994). He later plays a Changeling in Seventeen Seconds (2023), in the third season of Star Trek: Picard (2020).

Only Captain James T. Kirk has ever passed this test, and only then by reprogramming the scenario to allow himself to "win." He was awarded a commendation for "original thinking."
The novel "Star Trek: Enterprise - Kobayashi Maru" reveals that this test is based on a no-win scenario faced by Captain Jonathan Archer shortly before the outbreak of the Earth-Romulan War. The Enterprise (NX-01) was assigned to picket duty in May of 2155, patrolling shipping lanes as cargo vessels of the nascent Coalition of Planets were being attacked by unknown ships, which were suspected to be Romulan. The Romulans also placed cloaked gravitic mines in several shipping lanes, including through the Gamma Hydra system, one of which the United Earth freighter Kobayashi Maru struck in Gamma Hydra Section 10, severely damaging and disabling the ship. Archer attempted to rescue the Kobayashi Maru, but the Enterprise was attacked by three Romulan birds-of-prey, realizing there was no way to rescue the ship without the Enterprise almost certainly being destroyed, he made the incredibly difficult decision to order the Enterprise to withdraw, leaving the Kobayashi Maru to be destroyed. The attack on the Kobayashi Maru was one of the final acts of aggression that led to the Earth-Romulan War.
