      Spider-Man's long-time girlfriend Gwen Stacy makes her first animated appearance. Producers had planned to use her much earlier, but because of her brutal demise in the comic books, they decided against it with the feeling that it would be too gruesome for a Saturday morning cartoon.

      Because of such, MJ has been the default love interest for Spider-Man in cartoons and movies since. This trend was only broken in The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man Homecoming films, where Gwen and Liz were Peter's crushes.
