The "Murder Steer" is a Texas legend and a bad omen. A large steer appears; it is either red or black, the word "MURDER" is branded on its side. Anyone who reads the brand will soon be murdered, or someone close to them will be murdered.

The legend of the Murder Steer came from a real life event in Brewster County Texas in 1886. Two men, Henry Powe and Fine Gilland were arguing over a bull calf.

Powe was killed in the dispute. The bull calf was branded with the word "MURDER" and let loose. The Murder Steer was seen roaming the free range for years, it became the source of many ghost stories.
