Mr. Monk and the Sleeping Suspect

Agent Grooms refers to Monk as "Marion the Librarian." Monk says he's doesn't know what the agent means by that. The reference is from "The Music Man." However, in Mr. Monk and the Airplane (2002), Monk says that this musical is one of his favorites when Aunt Min says she got tickets for them to see the stage version. If this musical is one of his favorites, then he would know what Agent Grooms was referring to with his insult.

It's possible that Monk didn't understand why the moniker would be a nickname or an insult. Marian is a strong, socially capable character with a solid moral center and a great deal of compassion, a comparison that to him wouldn't register as making sense or being negative.

One of the main clues involves an unusually tied knot in a string tied around a package mailed to the murder victim. In reality, the U.S. Postal Service has not accepted packages secured with string since at least the 1980s because the strings cannot pass through mail-sorting equipment. Packages must be secured with tape.
