Wedded Bliss

This episode appears to be based on several separate cases/incidents:

• The Nike sweatshops controversies. This refers to widespread criticism beginning in the 1990's over Nike's use of overseas factories-particularly in countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, and China-where workers faced poor labor conditions, low wages, and alleged human rights abuses. Investigations and media reports revealed practices such as child labor, physical abuse, and unsafe working environments. These revelations sparked global protests and calls for corporate accountability. In response, Nike implemented reforms including independent factory audits, a code of conduct, and transparency initiatives, though critics argue issues still persist in parts of its supply chain.
• The crackdown of illegal sweatshops in the U.S.
• The 1989 Oba Chandler case. The case involved the 1989 rape and murder of Joan Rogers and her two teenage daughters, Michelle and Christe, while they were vacationing in Florida. Chandler lured the family onto his boat, assaulted them, and then tied them up and threw them overboard with concrete blocks tied to their necks. Their bodies were found floating in Tampa Bay. Chandler was identified through a flyer of his handwriting and was convicted in 1994. He was executed by lethal injection in 2011.

The defendants are initially charged with three counts of murder in the second degree and two counts of kidnapping in the first degree for the imprisonment and murder of the two Mexican teens, and the murder of a city inspector. Since the inspector was a government employee performing an official duty when he was killed that makes his death first degree murder. The teenagers were being held against their will, which is kidnapping, and a murder committed during a kidnapping is murder in the first degree. Plus when more than one person is killed in relation to the same criminal transaction that is also murder in the first degree. The inspector, and the two teenagers were killed to prevent the discovery of the sweat shop, making all of these murders part of the same criminal transaction. Meaning all three counts of murder should have been first degree murder.
