This episode appears to be based on the following events:
The 1989 "Keating Five" scandal and the subsequent savings and loan crisis. The scandal was part of the savings and loan crisis, involving five U.S. senators-Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini, John Glenn, John McCain, and Donald Riegle-accused of improperly pressuring regulators to ease scrutiny of Charles Keating's Lincoln Savings and Loan. Regulators backed off, fearing that it might fuel a major political controversy.
The Michael Milken case. Milken, the 1980s "junk bond king," revolutionized corporate finance with leveraged buyouts but was convicted of securities and tax felonies in 1990. He served time in prison and was later pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2020.
The 1986 Ivan Boesky case. Boesky was a former American stock trader who became infamous for his prominent role in an insider trading scandal that occurred in the United States during the mid-1980s. He was charged and pled guilty to insider trading, was fined a record $100 million, and later became an informant.
The 1986 Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) money laundering scandal. The scandal revealed the BCCI as a global money-laundering hub tied to dictators, the Medellín Cartel, and terrorist groups. Raided in 1991, it earned the nickname "Bank of Crooks and Criminals International." Washington lawyer Clark Clifford was implicated but had charges dropped for health reasons; he and his partner later paid a $5 million settlement.

Goofs
When Ceretta and Logan go to the Local 8157 Metal Workers Union meeting, the security guard says that they are having a closed door session and only union members are allowed in. Ceretta shows him his shield and then enters anyways, however simply being a police officer would not give him the authority to enter. A union meeting is considered a private gathering and is strictly protected by the First Amendment, meaning that the police cannot enter a union meeting, unless they either are invited inside, have a warrant, have probable cause, or there is an exigent circumstance such as a person's life being in jeopardy.
