The 1988 Joe Sanchez Case. Sanchez was an honest NYPD officer who discovered corruption and was framed in 1983 by corrupt cops. He was charged in relation to a 1982 drug bust. Sanchez however was later proven innocent.
The term "blue wall of silence". The "blue wall of silence" refers to a widespread culture within law enforcement where officers often refuse to report the misconduct of their colleagues. This code of silence, also known as the "blue code" or "blue shield," is fueled by loyalty, fear of retribution, and a sense of camaraderie among officers.
The Watergate scandal. A major political scandal in the United States during the early 1970s, stemming from a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., on June 17, 1972. The burglars were connected to President Richard Nixons re-election campaign, and the subsequent cover-up efforts by the Nixon administration led to a constitutional crisis. Investigations revealed extensive abuses of power, including illegal surveillance and political sabotage. As the scandal unfolded, key figures resigned or were convicted, and Nixon's secret Oval Office recordings became crucial evidence. Facing almost certain impeachment, President Nixon resigned on August 8, 1974-the first U.S. president to do so. He was later pardoned by his successor, Gerald Ford.

Goofs
In the scene where Cragen goes to City Hall in uniform, the bagpipe band at the beginning of that scene is actually the New York City Fire Department bagpipe band, not the Police Department's.
