    • Trivia
This episode appears to be based on several separate cases/incidents:
      • The 1991 Wanda Holloway case. Holloway was a Texas mom who asked her brother-in-law to hire a hit man--a hit man who was to kill the mother of a girl competing with her daughter for a spot on a Texas cheerleading squad. After a second trial, Holloway pleaded "no contest" to attempted murder. The judge found Holloway guilty and sentenced her to ten years in prison. She was released on March 1, 1997, after serving six months of her sentence. The event was later made into two films Willing to Kill: The Texas Cheerleader Story (1992) and The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom (1993).
      • The 1991 University of Iowa shooting. On November 1, 1991, in Iowa City, Iowa, Gang Lu, a 28-year-old former graduate student in physics, killed five people and critically injured another before taking his own life. Lu's motivation stemmed from his belief that his doctoral dissertation had been unfairly overlooked for the prestigious D.C. Spriestersbach Dissertation Prize, which was awarded to his former roommate, Linhua Shan. Lu had written letters outlining his grievances and intentions, which were discovered posthumously.
      • The 1932 Massie Trial. Thalia Massie, a white Navy wife, claimed she was assaulted by a group of Native Hawaiian and Asian men. When the initial trial ended in a hung jury, her mother, Grace Fortescue, along with two Navy men, kidnapped and murdered one of the accused, Joseph Kahahawai. They were convicted of manslaughter, not murder, and served only one hour in custody. The case drew national attention and highlighted racial tensions in pre-statehood Hawaii.
      • Ripped from the pages of The Bad Seed and its adaptations.
    • Goofs
Both Stone and Robinette keep referring to Ron Borland's fingerprints being on the murder weapon as compelling evidence against him. However the gun belonged to Borland and was registered to him, it only makes sense his fingerprints were on it. His fingerprints being the only prints on it proves nothing and is weak circumstantial evidence at best, it could easily be explained by someone else using the gun while wearing gloves, or wiping it down after using it, with Borland handling it at some point after the murder.
    • Quotes
      • Ben Stone: The Court of Appeals is moving with the Supreme Court.
      • Leonard Willis: The Court of Appeals changes its mind more often than I change my socks. That permit was for the Borland business. The warrant was for the Borland home. Any idiot can see the cops were relying on the phone call.
      • Judge Thomas Simon: I'm not even an idiot, I can see it.
