This episode appears to be based on several separate cases/incidents:
The 1984 Ron Levin (aka "Billionaire Boys Club") murder case. The case involved the so-called "Billionaire Boys Club," a group of wealthy young men led by Joe Hunt. Hunt was convicted of murdering Levin, a con man who had swindled the group out of money. Although Levin's body was never found, Hunt was sentenced to life in prison based on witness testimony and circumstantial evidence. The case became a symbol of 1980s greed and ambition gone wrong.
The 1957 murder of Baxter Shorter. Shorter was a Los Angeles city employee and key witness in a high-profile 1957 kidnapping-for-ransom case involving the missing man Leon Victor. Shorter, who had knowledge of the crime, was abducted from his home just days after speaking with police. He was never seen again and is presumed murdered to silence him. His disappearance helped convict two suspects, including Leonard Niles, who was later executed.

Goofs
Logan says that they found a surgical pin in the victim's knee but that the pin was generic and there was no way it could help them trace the identity of the body. All implantable medical hardware, even something as small as a pin, screw, plate or a rod have serial numbers on them that identify the name of the patient and also the name of the surgeon/doctor that implanted it.
