The poignant piece that the very beautiful, endearing and sweet Madeline plays when Bertie ends up tipping the vase over her is the Nocturne in F minor, Op. 55, No. 1 (1844) by Frédéric Chopin (1810 - 1849). Madeline suggests that this work was influenced by the French author George Sand (Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin [1804 - 1876] - a lady), whom Chopin had met in 1836, and did not like at first, but by 1838 they began a serious relationship which lasted some years.
