After Hazell's wallet has been made lighter with an encounter by the taxman.

He accepts a job in Croydon. Mrs Bradley is a widow with an overbearing son and a lodger that she might be romantically interested in but knows nothing about.

When Hazell follows the lodger he finds that the man has vanished in thin air and arrested by the police for importuning in the gents toilets.
