This is a profound study of grief: Ridge is bubbling over with a volatile, defensive anger, while Quist attempts to maintain a mask of normality that is clearly slipping. Their clashes give the show a new, sharper bite. It is a true ordeal by fire for the new secretary, Barbara Mason, who walks into an office defined by fury and mourning.

John Paul delivers his finest performance yet as Quist; he looks substantially older and more haunted than in the previous series, perfectly capturing the weight of institutional guilt. Simon Oates is equally strong, though his fashion sense remains questionable-having traded the cravats for a bizarre "belt around the neck" look. The episode is packed with stellar guest turns, notably John Barron, who excels as a condescending superior. The standout moment remains Ridge's macabre discovery in the laboratory, a chilling reminder of the cold reality behind their bureaucratic battles.
