The vent windows, front door frames, rear view mirror, windshield wipers and, in some scenes, the windshield panes have been removed from the professor's VW bus, presumably to provide a better view of the actors. The VW logo was also missing to avoid giving Volkswagen product placement advertising, although it's obviously one of the iconic VW vehicles of the era.
