Interesting because it's so different from the later TV series.

I had no idea that "McHale's Navy" was originally an episode of "Alcoa Premier"...an anthology series introduced by Fred Astaire. However, its tone and style is completely unlike the later TV series...and that what makes it worth seeing.

When the story begins, a by the book lieutenant arrives at the tiny base where Commander McHale and his few men are stationed. McHale's style and relaxed atmosphere on the base horrify the new guy...even if he did graduate from West Point. However, through the course of the show, the lieutenant comes to realize that he still has a lot to learn!

This show is clearly NOT a comedy but an interesting drama. As a TV series, I don't think this iteration of "McHale's Navy" could have worked...but as a one-off drama, it's terrific...better than the TV show.

By the way, a couple of McHale's men and McHale himself appeared in this show but most of the cast was never seen again after this "Alcoa" episode. And, there was no Captain Binghamton nor anyone like him.
