James Duffy's first and only short film is a parody of DC Comics made with a limited budget, but it has a good idea. It starts with a good opening sequence that manages to replicate the essence of classic comics. In the rest, you can tell that it is an amateur project because the filming took place in an ordinary restaurant, the humor is very beginner-level, and the Batman and Robin costumes look like they were bought from a costume shop. Fortunately, both characters are played by Sam Rockwell and Justin Long, which gives it a good touch. Here, Batman acts as a more annoying companion whom Robin is embarrassed by. He's concerned that Batman's presence will ruin the date, and the situation is worthy of a sketch. Batman manages to make Robin confess his intentions with Kate at the wrong moment, making the situation quite uncomfortable for the Boy Wonder. Although it seems that everything will end well, the short film takes an unexpected turn for Robin, and Batman seizes the opportunity to show that he still cares about his partner. Even for a low-budget project, it has what it takes to be a good parody. The good thing is that it was revamped as one of the segments of Movie 43, where James Duffy significantly improved the initial idea. Robin's Big Date is another one of many forgotten short films that failed to make an impact due to its low quality, but it is a draft that can be looked at to see how it was before being improved into one of the most underrated films in cinema. My final rating for this short film is a 4/10.
