Nothing is done that is in any degree sacrilegious

This picture deals with one of those delicate subjects connected with the church that one almost hesitates to undertake to say much about. The substance of the story is that a starving musician entering a church to offer his devotions before the Virgin, is given the necklace suspended around her neck. He disposes of it to obtain money with which to buy food; is arrested, tried, convicted and sentenced to execution, but before the headsman can do his work the Virgin appears and places the necklace again around his neck, and assists him to escape before the officials recover from their consternation. Whether it is wise to undertake to develop a subject so intimately connected with a religious belief of millions of people is a question which will never be decided. In this particular instance nothing is done that is in any degree sacrilegious, and perhaps a film of this character will exert a beneficial influence upon many who see it. The acting is dignified and quite in harmony with the subject, and this is admirably contrasted with the frenzied appeals of the prisoner. The photography is an improvement over much of this firm's previous work, nearly the whole film being clear and correct in tone. Apart from the particular religious note the film is to be commended. The statue comes to life, and, taking off the priceless jeweled collar that hangs round the neck, hands it to the minstrel and bids him sell it to get food. As he comes out of the cathedral he is seen by two burgesses who recognize the necklace, and set the watch upon the hapless minstrel. He is seized and tried before the wardens, but protests that the necklace was given him. He is tortured in order to extract a confession, but stands to his story, and at last he is led out to execution. As the ax is about to fall, the statue appears and tells the astonished crowd that the minstrel had told the truth, restores the necklace to him and sets him free.
