Sin City (2005), director
Robert Rodriguez had originally considered
Johnny Depp for the part of Wallace in a story called "Hell And Back", featured in the "Sin City" maxi-series, but the segment was scrapped in the hope of using it in a potential sequel. Depp was then offered the role of Jacky Boy, but had to decline due to scheduling conflicts. In 2006, when Rodriguez first started putting together ideas for "Sin City 2", he again considered Depp to play Wallace in a "Hell and Back" segment, but in the end, Rodriguez chose to adapt "Just Another Saturday Night," "A Dame to Kill For," and the never-published "The Long, Bad Night" instead.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was cast as a new character called Johnny in the latter story, despite offers to star in other movies such as
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and
Godzilla (2014). As Depp was enthusiastic to be part of the franchise, Rodriguez hoped to adapt Hell and Back for a third movie, as he planned to film all of Frank Miller's stories at some point. However, the box-office failure of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) put those plans on indefinite hold.
