A shady raider ,who made it big in Africa -he was supposedly responsible for the death of many natives - comes back to his family's town where he is not the welcome;those posh bourgeois people are afraid of the scandal their black sheep may spark off ;besides their factories are having problems and their workers launch a strike. But they soon change their mind when they learn that the prodigal relative is immensely rich.

The remake by Marcel L'Herbier (1934) is much better ;this one simplifies the story and multiplies the character at such a speed that it's sometimes hard to follow a melodramatic plot ; the ending ,notably, is sweetened ,and the hypocrit family is all sweet and light , the hero is hardly sickened by their attitude when he takes his wife around the world ; the movie begins with an attack of the baddies (the natives, colonialist spirit as tradition has it ); when the hero is jailed, who would believe the chamber would not prove him right ?The problems with the working-class are boiled down to the dismissal of a worker who has beaten a child .
