The foundation for something much greater

Heroes of Might and Magic already has the basic formula that would make the series so addictive. Exploring the map, collecting resources, capturing mines, building towns and slowly creating a stronger army all work well here. The turn based battles are simple compared with the later games, but there is still enough strategy in positioning creatures and deciding when to attack or defend.

What I like most is seeing how many of the ideas that became essential to Heroes are already here. Different factions, heroes gaining experience, spells, artifacts and creature growth all give me reasons to keep exploring. The colorful fantasy style also gives the game plenty of personality, even if the presentation is much more basic than what came later.

The biggest problem is simply that Heroes II and especially Heroes III improved almost everything. The first game feels slower, smaller and more limited once I know where the series eventually went. But that does not make it bad. The core idea was already strong enough to build an entire series around. A good strategy game on its own, and an important beginning to something much better.

The fantasy genre features imaginative and often magical worlds, characters, and events. It explores realms beyond the boundaries of reality, featuring elements such as magic, mythical creatures, supernatural powers, and fantastical settings. These stories can take place in entirely fictional worlds or blend fantastical elements with real-world settings.
