Segundo de Chomon was a Spanish cameraman who, since about 1903, had turned producer for Pathe, making the sort of stop-motion magic pictures that are better recalled as from Melies' studio. Although Melies shot most of his movies in the studio, where he had a well-thought-out system for the varied shots and camera movements, de Chomon was not averse to going outdoors. To a large extent, their backgrounds determined their differences. Melies was a stage magician turned film maker who needed absolute control over his mechanisms to obtain the effects he wanted, while de Chomon was a documentary cameraman turned movie magician, used to shooting on site.
