Fritz Kampers and Maria Paudler want to get married. But the landowner-nobleman Hans Junkermann has banned marriage among his staff without his permission, and he isn't permitting it. Fraulein Paudler leads all the women on strike. This means the men must cook and clean for themselves, which they do very poorly. However, Vivian Gibson is dealing with her bad review as an opera diva by admitting its truth. She comes by and charms the men. Junkermann offers his hospitality, and she replies by cooking for them. Everyone is in a great mood -- except for the women -- and Fraulein Gibson makes all the men fall in love with her by her piano playing and singing a love song.

It's a pretty good comedy of the Teutonic type, and people start with a ridiculous premise and charm their ways out of it. It's not a laugh-out-oud comedy by any means, but there is plenty of amusing pomposity all around, save on the part of Fraulein Gibson.

At a farm-castle, the count refuses to give his consent to a marriage between Loni, the miller's daughter and the count's chamber help. Before this, the farm women decide to go on strike in protest.
