Warhammer: Dark Omen is exactly the kind of old fantasy strategy game that still has a very special pull for me. It is not just about moving units around a battlefield. It has atmosphere, weight and that grim Warhammer feeling where every fight feels dangerous. Leading Morgan Bernhardt and the Grudgebringers through battles against undead, greenskins and worse gives the campaign a strong identity. I like that the game feels like a dirty fantasy war, not a clean heroic adventure.

What makes it work so well is the focus on regiments, positioning and survival. Morale matters, artillery can be brutal, cavalry needs timing, and losing experienced troops actually hurts. That gives every battle tension. You are not building bases or collecting resources. You are managing the army you have, trying to keep it alive, and hoping your decisions do not ruin the next mission. I really enjoy that pressure. It makes victories feel earned, especially when the battle turns messy and you still manage to hold the line.

It has aged, of course. The controls and camera can feel stiff today, and the difficulty can be rough in a way that is not always fair. Some missions feel like they punish mistakes too hard, especially when your losses carry forward. But that is also part of why Dark Omen stays memorable. It has character. It has bite. It captures Warhammer fantasy better than many later games, and even with its flaws, I still think it is one of the more interesting and enjoyable strategy games from that era.

These stories can take place in entirely fictional worlds or blend fantastical elements with real-world settings.

A few years after helping to end the skaven plot in Shadow of the Horned Rat, Morgan Bernhardt, commander of the "Grudgebringer" mercenaries, continues to take on work for those who have the gold to spare with the Empire. After helping to defend a trading post from a goblin attack, Bernhardt finds himself called to the city of Altdorf for a meeting with Emperor Karl Franz, who reveals to him that orcs have recently begun invading the Border Princes from the south. Agreeing to help Sven Carlsson, a border prince and Bernhardt's old friend and employer, the mercenaries head to contend with the threat, but soon discover that the orcs are fleeing into the empire to escape attack from an increasing number of undead forces.
