A remarkably intelligent and deeply underrated adaptation

I started Colomba expecting a relatively straightforward story of Corsican vendetta and found something far more subtle.

What impressed me most is the film's refusal to reduce Corsica to picturesque savagery or the conflict to "civilization versus barbarism." The story gradually reveals a society governed by several competing systems at once: family loyalty, honour, local tradition and state justice. The characters have to navigate all of them.

Orso is particularly well written. At first, his continental superiority is irritating, but he quickly becomes much more interesting. He learns to respect the laws and instincts of the land he came from without surrendering his own judgment to them. He understands Corsica again, yet keeps a cold and independent mind.

Colomba is even more fascinating. She is intelligent, perceptive, courageous and profoundly rooted in her world. The film never makes it easy to decide where her clear understanding of reality ends and where passion begins. Several times I changed my judgment of her completely - and that is perhaps the film's greatest strength.

Even the prefect, who could easily have been written as a caricature of useless state authority, is more nuanced: naive about Corsica and reluctant to leave his comfort zone, but fundamentally decent, capable of recognizing his mistakes and unwilling to condemn blindly once evidence appears.

The filmmakers also make a real effort to evoke an authentic Corsica through the locations, traditional music, and period clothing.

The film also gave me a new appreciation for Prosper Mérimée. He did not merely use Corsica as an exotic setting; he understood the internal logic of its traditions, its ideas of justice, honour, memory and family. That depth survives beautifully in this adaptation.

My only reservation is the final sequence in Provence. For me, the story had already reached a powerful and natural conclusion, and the additional cruelty and dramatic emphasis felt unnecessarily theatrical.

Still, this was an unexpected discovery: intelligent, atmospheric, beautifully acted and far deeper than its tiny number of ratings suggests.

A hidden gem, and one that made me immediately want to read Mérimée's novella.
