Worms is one of those games where the basic idea was already strong from the beginning. A handful of worms, a destructible battlefield and a pile of weapons is really all it needs. I like having a limited amount of time to decide what to do, line up the shot and then hope I have judged the angle correctly. Even a simple turn can become funny when everything goes wrong.

The weapons are what give it so much personality. Bazookas and grenades are simple enough, but dynamite, mines and air strikes create much more interesting situations. Wind can completely ruin a perfect looking shot, and blowing away part of the landscape can be just as useful as hitting another worm directly. I really like that the terrain is part of the strategy instead of just being decoration.

Multiplayer is where it works best for me. Trying to knock someone into the water, hiding in an awkward position or watching a badly thrown grenade bounce back toward my own team never gets old quickly. There is definitely some luck involved, but that is part of the charm. A match can turn from a clever tactical battle into complete stupidity in seconds, and I like that.

For me, the original Worms still holds up because the foundation is so good. Later games add more weapons, modes and polish, but the important parts are already here. It is tactical without becoming complicated, funny without trying too hard and perfect for a few matches with other people. Simple idea, lots of chaos and still very easy for me to enjoy.
