The real Margaret Thatcher was the serving Prime Minister when this play opened, and she and her husband went to see it - something neither wanted to do, but they were strongly advised to do so by spin doctors, so that they would appear "good sports" who were unaffected by the play's strongly satirical tone. However, it became quickly known that they had been deeply offended by the play, which delighted author John Wells.
