Expectations were actually pretty high for 'An Officer and a Duck'. Absolutely love Donald Duck and have done throughout his career and evolution. Of the Mickey, Goofy and Donald trio, he has always been my personal favourite (despite not being the most iconic, that's Mickey) with great comic timing and a fiery, cantankerous personality. He also has a lot of classic cartoons, like the other two, the best of them being among Disney's best cartoons, even if he doesn't have as many milestones as Mickey.

'An Officer and a Duck' is made up of six cartoons ('Donald Gets Drafted', 'The Vanishing Private', 'Sky Trooper', 'Fall Out-Fall In', 'The Old Army Game' and 'Home Defense'), mostly revolving around Donald in the military (a setting that actually fits his personality very well). Five of them are absolutely great, the best outstanding, and even the weakest of the six is still good if slightly lacking in comparison. And 'An Officer and a Duck' as an overall whole is very, very good and a great representation of Donald, whether in character or against type.

It starts excellently with 'Donald Gets Drafted'. Not one of my favourite Disney cartoons, but still very entertaining, the funniest being the first test with the colours before Donald gets in the army. The animation is beautiful, with the fluid backgrounds and lively colours to be especially admired. Loved the music, the incidental music is jaunty and energetic and the song "the Army's not the Army anymore" is catchy and uplifting. The story is engaging and well paced and while there have been funnier Donald Duck cartoons, it is still amusing. Donald is very likable here, while Pete is a great foil. Clarence Nash and Billy Bletcher as usual voice impeccably.

Every bit as great is 'The Vanishing Private'. Yet another example of why this reviewer love Disney and Donald Duck so much. It is not one of my favourite Donald cartoons, but it is still great, with beautiful animation and catchy, jaunty music promising to draw you right in and doing so. The story is slightly routine, but fast-paced and interesting, and the physical humour and gags are funny and imaginative. Donald is likable and well drawn and Pete is a great contrast, managing to even have more of a temper than Donald. The voice acting is spot on.

'Sky Trooper' is one of the compilation's high points. 'Sky Trooper' is a fine example of Donald with Pete. They work wonderfully together, with Donald likable and Pete amusing and sometimes scary. Both Clarence Nash and Billy Bletcher do a fantastic job with the voice work, their voices are distinctive yet both put so much energy into their characters, especially Bletcher. On top of that, the animation is beautiful, and there is a suitably jaunty music score that immediately draws you into the cartoon. The humour also works, with imaginative gags and inspired physical comedy.

'Fall Out-Fall In' and 'The Old Army Game' fare the best. 'Fall Out-Fall In' doesn't see Donald getting easily frustrated, temperamental or annoyed and the situations going on around him, which is where his personality is at his best. But we do feel sympathy for him, an approach that has either worked or hasn't, and luckily it does work here. And this sympathy isn't mild or anything, we genuinely feel for him and can really identify with this situation. 'Fall Out-Fall In' with or without this is still a quite outstanding short. The animation is very detailed and beautifully coloured, with the backgrounds particularly evocative. The music has a lot of character and the orchestration is very creative without overpowering. There are some neat gags, mainly revolving around Donald and too many noises. It was very easy to relate to his noisy neighour problems, having been there myself. Donald marching through the seasons is another nice touch, we also feel sympathy for him here and that is not because the short is telling us to. While Donald is against his usual persona he and his situations evoke genuine sympathy.

'The Old Army Game's' animation is wonderful, with the colours vibrant and the backgrounds fluid and always interesting to look at. And 'The Old Army Game' also contains some of the best character animation seen for both Donald and Pete. Have always loved the music in the Disney cartoons, and this is no exception, right from the rousing main theme to the typically energetic and action-enhancing background scoring. The story is crisply paced and very tightly told, helped by the fantastic rapport between Donald and Pete and the imaginatively timed and funny sight gags. The missing legs and suicide attempt sequence is the highlight, both uproarious and disturbing. Clarence Nash and Billy Bletcher are as ever impeccable.

Weakest is the still quite good if a little lacking 'Home Defense'. The animation does look pretty, and the music has bundles of energy. Also liked how Donald's temperamental personality contrasted with Huey, Duey and Louie's cute ones, and Clarence "Ducky" Nash's vocal work is as impeccable as ever. However, the story is not always that crisply paced and is very routine. This would be helped if the gags were good, however while some do work and are imaginative there are also some that are reasonably amusing at best and suffer from over-familiarity and lack of variety.

All in all, very, very good, and almost great due to the inferiority of one cartoon bringing it down a little. 8/10.
