The film is based on the novel by John Braine. As a tribute to his memory, the opening scene in the school classroom was filmed at "St Bede's Catholic Grammar School", the same grammar school that he attended, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. The school merged with St Joseph's in 2014 to become "St Bede's and St Joseph's Catholic College."
