I dearly love the silent era of cinema, and I am very fond of the tale of Sweeney Todd, made especially famous in the last several decades thanks to Stephen Sondheim. I don't know how it has taken me this long to discover that the morbid saga received cinematic adaptation as far back as 1928, and I can only assume that Sondheim has so eclipsed other renditions that they've kind of been forgotten even in the industry's consciousness. In fairness, beyond essential classics and underappreciated treasures, there are a great many titles of the earliest years of the medium that have faded in visibility over time, and as this counts among those, there are certainly various assumptions we can reasonably make.

Those assumptions are confirmed as the minutes tick by, as the storytelling is simplified and direct, but also often weirdly vague and indistinct, or at least less than perfectly lucid. The ravages of time and a deteriorated print don't help, but the intertitles just fall by the wayside after a surprisingly early point, and filmmaker Walter West was relying on the strength of the tableau to convey the narrative and invest contemporary audiences. For as much as I adore fare from this period, I just don't think this is an example of something that was well made enough, neither in concept or in execution, to bear that strength. The story is there in its own reimagined form, certainly, and the flick is duly well made, but it has shortcomings, and at no point makes any particular impression. Factor in a messy ending that West presumably thought was more clever than it is, moreover employing a tiresome storytelling trope that I hate, and this feature leaves something to be desired.

It's not altogether bad, and I'm glad for those who get more out of it than I do. It's the least among cinematic adaptations of George Dibdin-Pitt's tale that I've seen, however, and not only will it do nothing to change the minds of those who already have a hard time engaging with silent films, but even silent devotees are likely to find this one of the lesser (or at least remarkable) instances. It's still softly worthwhile on its own merits, and also as a surviving work of so long ago, but unless you're that type of cinephile who will watch anything and everything, this is one version of 'Sweeney Todd' that you can maybe pass on by.
