The literal translation of the title of this movie is: behind the scene.

This movie made in the early era of the Chinese reform is a very subtle form of criticism on the tight governmental control on the media in the form of interpersonal relationships of those who worked in the movie industry.  This control had reigned so long, not only it killed creativity, which is a necessity for artists and entertainers, it is also the very reason that made the Chinese movie industry so backward in comparison to the rest of the world, and as a matter of fact, not only the movie industry, but the entire art, media and entertainment industries as well.
