Some war films become international landmarks. Others quietly tell a powerful story and are remembered mainly by those willing to seek them out. Eto bylo v razvedke (It Was an Intelligence Mission) belongs firmly in the second category.

Based on the real experiences of a young wartime scout, the film follows twelve year old Vasya Kolosov, an orphan who runs away to the front during the Second World War and finds himself attached to a Soviet reconnaissance unit. What begins as the story of a boy trying to prove himself gradually becomes a story about belonging, friendship, and earning the respect of hardened soldiers.

The obvious comparisons are to films such as Ivan's Childhood and, to a lesser extent, Come and See. While it lacks the artistic ambition and international reputation of those classics, it shares their interest in how war affects children and forces them into adult roles far too early.

What I enjoyed most was the relationship between Vasya and the reconnaissance platoon. At first he is treated almost like a mascot, something to be protected and occasionally tolerated. As the story progresses, however, his courage and determination force the men around him to see him differently. They come to realize that he is not just a child attached to the unit, but a genuine comrade and friend.

The film is straightforward and sincere, avoiding excessive melodrama while still delivering emotional moments. The cast works well together, and the wartime atmosphere feels authentic without overshadowing the human story at its center.

It may not be one of the most famous Soviet war films ever made, but it is an engaging and heartfelt one. For viewers interested in lesser known World War II cinema, Eto bylo v razvedke is well worth discovering.
