The concert was conceived by Tony Hollingsworth on behalf of Nelson Mandela, who had been in jail in South Africa since 1962. It was aired live in Great Britain on BBC2. Due to the BBC's requirement under its charter to remain politically impartial, it cut away frequently when the performers gave political speeches. When the concert aired in the United States, Fox Television systematically deleted all political references.
