The paintings of Thomas Hart Benton themselves serve as a microcosm of the overall question that Burns asks in his documentaries, "Who are we Americans?" Benton was one of the three "Regionalist Triumvirate," which also included Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry. "Regionalism" refers to a short-lived era of painting that believes the solution to most of the country's problems lies in returning to its grass roots (literally) by moving from cities back to the country of America.
