The cave in which the protagonist imagines various scenes is the famous Glyfada (or Vlychada) Cave of Diros, located on the western coast of Laconian Mani, in the Bay of Diros. By 1960, about 1,600 meters had been explored and mapped, while the known length of the cave exceeds 15 kilometers. The first underwater exploration took place in 1970. Inside the cave, fossilized bones of a panther, hyena, lion, deer, marten, and the largest concentration of hippopotamus bones in Europe have been found.
